Commonly referred to as “doping”, one of the biggest problems in modern sports is the use of performance enhancing drugs. As you might imagine, the organisations that regulate major competitions take a dim view of this kind of behaviour; taking a drug to build your muscle growth or to give you a boost of energy is hardly fair competition after all.

Even if you take the view that doping is no more of a threat to fair competition than high-technology materials in sports clothing and equipment, performance enhancing drugs can present a substantial threat to health in both the long term and the short term. With the pressure of competition, it’s not unknown for athletes to cause major damage to their health in a bid to go beyond the limits of natural endurance and performance.

It took a little while for public opinion and sporting bodies to take a stance against drug use in sports though. In the 19th century and early 20th century, the practice wasn’t something swept under the carpet – it was openly used. As incongruous as it might seem, they were even used in endurance walking races – one contestant in an 1807 race openly used laudanum to stay awake for upwards of 24 hours.

It was the widespread use of nitroglycerine – the drug used to stimulate the hearts of cardiac arrest victims – in the bicycle races of Europe and America that put ‘doping’ out of fashion though. Although the drug kept the riders alert and active beyond the limits of human endurance, the side effects were fairly disruptive.

One champion of the American circuit, Major Taylor, was unable to finish a race in New York because of the hallucinations his drug use and sheer exhaustion had caused. As he put it, “I cannot go with safety, for there is a man chasing me around the ring with a knife in his hand.”

Although few cases of doping have had such dramatic effects as this case, almost every major sporting body has implemented a drug testing programme for competitive events in the wake of the public backlash against this kind of activity. The first was the International Association of Athletics Federations, who banned the practice in 1928 – even though they lacked any kind of drug testing kit and had to rely upon good sportsman ship and an honest word. It took decades but eventually the policy was adopted by FIFA, the Union Cycliste Internationale and the International Olympic Committee in 1966.

Ever since there has been an ongoing battle between pharmaceutical science on one side of the doping divide and advances on the other. Drug designers keep trying to find workarounds for detection methods whilst the authorities and the more reputable elements of the science world try to find new ways of detecting them.

In 1999, regulatory efforts around the world were combined for the very first time and the Word Anti Doping Agency was founded. Today, drug testing kits are developed to a universal high standard and increasing numbers of athletes are caught in the act.

Although the precise origins of the connection between sports and international relations remain obscure, all cultures have participated over the course of history in different physical contests that fostered cultural exchange and contributed to their citizens’ political discourse. The ancient Egyptians swam, raced, wrestled, and played games with balls. The ancient Greeks held large athletic festivals, including the Olympic Games that drew athletes’ attention from all over the ancient world. Two of the very first ‘nations’ to engage their athletes in sport competitions, were the Greeks and the Romans. They competed in various athletic events like chariot races, or throwing the javelin, often relying on the participation of animals, or on the use of mechanical contrivances, a tradition continued into modern times in sports such as dog racing, horse racing, and shooting.

During the Middle Ages, the cultural isolation imposed by the feudal system and religious doctrine that opposed the use of the body for play hampered the development of organised sport in the Western world. For many centuries, contests between knights in tournaments that emphasised military skill were among the only forms of approved, public sports. In the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, games and exercise attained renewed popularity. As had been the case in ancient times, however, politics and social class circumscribed activity. Sports that required wealth or leisure, such as polo or falconry, were the province of the upper classes, affluent nations, while inexpensive, massed sports, such as soccer, took root among commoners and underdeveloped countries.

The late 19th century witnessed an expanding belief in sport as useful recreation and as a mean of interconnectivity between people and nations, while in industrialized societies equipment was standardized, local and national organizations were set up to govern play, and a doctrine of character-building declared sports to be a necessary endeavor for men. The revival of the Olympics in 1896 and the blossoming U.S. intercollegiate athletic system boosted many forms of amateur, or unpaid sports at the same time that professional sports (such as baseball, boxing, and bicycle racing) drew large numbers of spectators. Sports that were traditionally played only in specific countries became by legislative act or general acceptance, national sports, like baseball in the United States, bullfighting in Spain and Mexico, cricket in England, and ice hockey in Canada.

During the 20th century, sports took on an increasingly international flavor aside from the world championships for individual sports, like soccer’s World Cup, large-scale international meets, such as the Pan-American Games and the Commonwealth Games, were inaugurated. Sports have correspondingly become increasingly politicized, as the boycott of the 1980 Moscow games by Western nations has shown, or the retaliatory boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles games by Soviet-bloc nations, an exchange brought on by Soviet actions in Afghanistan.

Despite the difficulties that rose over the past, sport events are considered today a great opportunity for individual countries to promote their cultures, politics and trade. The new terms of globalization and international relations came into the scene of economic evolution and affected sport’s politics, regulations, communication and society as a whole, by using sports mass acceptance as a dominant tool for international negotiations and cultural exchange.

Aluminum Tubes In Sports And Recreation

Pete Sampras, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds are great sportsmen who have one thing in common among themselves. They have excelled in their sport of choice and have achieved greatness. Almost all of the equipment they used at one time or another during their rise to fame and fortune have been made out of or contain aluminum tubes!

Sports and recreation are two areas where the use of aluminum tubes has made great inroads in the manufacturing process of equipment. Baseball bats, frames of bicycle racers, wheel assemblies of skateboards, golf club heads, tennis racquet frames, exhaust headers and manifolds of race cars are just a few of the sports equipment that have been greatly improved and made superior with the use of extruded aluminum tubes.

Both fans and players love to hear the solid sound of a ball being hit squarely by a player’s baseball bat when a ballgame is in progress. Today’s baseball bat is a so much different from the ones used by Babe Ruth, baseball bats then are made of wood whereas today’s modern bats are made of extruded aluminum tubes albeit they still have wood inside. The combination of wood and aluminum made the players hit better and farther than before!

All cyclists in the world’s ultimate bicycle race, the Tour de France, use racers constructed from aluminum tube alloys in order to lower the weights of their bicycles to combat drag and in order to be able to pedal faster with lesser effort on their part.

The transition of tennis players from using wooden tennis racquets to aluminum framed tennis racquets also contributed to tennis advance into being considered a power game as players gained more control over their strokes when they started using racquets made from extruded aluminum tubes in various widths and sizes.

The water sport community also took great advantage of the versatility of aluminum tubes. Windsurfers, Hobie Cat enthusiasts, deep sea fishermen and even weekend water babies all use gadgets, parts and gears for their particular sport manufactured from marine grade aluminum tubes and stock. One important quality of aluminum is that is can be given an anodize coat and painted over to match the color scheme of your rig. From windsurfing beams to oars and deep sea fishing gear, aluminum tubes are in wide use in the marine community.

Take a look at the bottom of your son’s skateboard and chances are you will see that the wheel assemblies of high performance, competition type skateboards are made of aluminum tubes.

On the home front, even your outdoor chaise lounge and patio furniture, outdoor awning and umbrella and the ever present portable barbecue grill all have aluminum tubes as their main components.

Such is the versatility of aluminum that it is used regularly and extensively in more applications than we can imagine. Look at an elderly person’s walking cane and you will surely see a variant of the aluminum tube, anodized and painted, a testimony to the metal’s usefulness in almost all aspects of our daily living.
