Where To Get Equipment For Supercross Motorcycle Racing

Are you looking to participate in supercross motorcycle racing?  If you aren’t, what about your child? Regardless of who is interested in supercross motorcycle racing, there will come a time when you need to purchase equipment.  Whether you or your child plans on racing at a local indoor supercross track, an outdoor motocross track, or just wants to practice out in the backyard, the right equipment is essential. This equipment is not only essential for performance, but for safety as well. That is why it is important that the right equipment gets purchased.

Purchasing the right equipment, it sounds easy enough doesn’t it? Unfortunately, isn’t as always as it seems.  When it comes to getting started in supercross motorcycle racing, not everyone is an expert in the sport. In fact, many children want to idolize and be just like their favorite supercross racers.  Many adults choose to participate in supercross motorcycle racing, not only because they want to be like their favorite racer, but because the sport looks fun.  Unfortunately, if you are not an avid supercross motorcycle racing fan, especially one who is familiar with the sport, it can be difficult to purchase the needed equipment.

Although it can be difficult for some to purchase supercross motorcycle equipment, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you shouldn’t purchase it. Whether you, yourself, want to participate in supercross racing or your child does, everyone deserves the chance to follow their dreams.  Essentially, this means that you should take the time to familiarize yourself with supercross motorcycle racing, including the equipment that will be needed.  In addition to an off-road motorcycle, you will also find that you needed safety equipment. That safety equipment should include knee pads.  If you or your child is just getting started in off-road racing, it may be a good idea to protect yourself even more.  Once you get going, you can remove the extra safety gear, with caution of course.

Once you have taken the time to better understand supercross motorcycle racing and the equipment that is needed, you should be better prepared to start shopping. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find a local sports store or outdoor recreational store that carries supercross equipment.  For off-road bikes, you will find that it is often best to shop at an outdoor recreational sports store.  Also, you may be able to find a specific motorcycle store.  For instance, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki sell off-road bikes that are designed for supercross motorcycle racing. If you are able to find one of these stores, you are sure to find what you are looking for.  Many even have a fairly large selection of youth motorcycles.

Wherever you purchase an off-road supercross motorcycle, you should be able to purchase the safety equipment too.  If you already have an off-road motorcycle or made the decision to purchase one privately, you should still be able to find supercross safety equipment at most sports stores or outdoor recreational stores.  However, as previously mentioned, it really all depends on where you live.  Not all cites and towns, in the United States, have recreational sports stores and not all of those stores are guaranteed to have what you are looking for.  If that is the case, you may want to consider shopping online.

Online shopping is nice because it often gives you a large selection of products to choose from.  However, as with just about anything else in life, online shopping does have its disadvantages.  One of those disadvantages is that you cannot personally try out off-road bikes or safety equipment.  For adults, most of the equipment needed to participate in supercross motorcycle racing can be considered one size fits all, but that isn’t always the case with children.  You will find that youth bikes tend to come in a wide variety of different sizes, this is because all youths aren’t the same height or weight.  You can still purchase supercross equipment for your child online; however, you are advised to proceed with caution.

By keeping the above mentioned points in mind, you should be able to successfully go about finding and purchasing supercross motorcycle racing equipment.  In the event that you have any questions, whether you are shopping locally or online, you should be able to find a company representative who would be willing to assist you by answer any questions that you may have.

The Top Teams in Supercross Motorcycle Racing

Are you a fan of supercross motorcycle racing?  If so, there is a good chance that you are already familiar with some of the most popular supercross motorcycle racing teams.  If you are not, it is likely that you would like to famialrize yourself with them, especially if you are interested in becoming a full-time fan of the sport. As with just about any sport, you will find that supercross motorcycle racing has a number of different teams, which in a way can also be considered sponsors.

One of the most popular and well known supercross motorcycle racing teams is that of Honda. Honda is most well known for its production of vehicles. These vehicles range from everyday cars to motorcycles, including off-road motorcycles.  Perhaps, that is one of the reasons why Honda started their own supercross motorcycle racing team.  The most popular supercross racer to partner with Honda has been Jeremy McGrath. Although Jeremy McGrath is planning on retiring near the end of 2006, he, Honda, and a number of other sponsors are planning on going out with a bang.  That bang is the Jeremy McGrath Invitational, which is scheduled to take place in early October of 2006.

Like Honda, Kawasaki is another maker of off-road motorcycles. They have also developed the Kawasaki supercross racing team.  This team comprises of a couple of well known riders, including James Stewart. James Stewart was recently crowned the 2006 World Supercross GP Champion.  In addition to the 2006 champion, James Stewart, the Kawasaki team also includes Michael Byrne.

Suzuki, also another maker of a number of different vehicles, including off-road motorcycles, is another supercross motorcycle racing team. That team comprises of Ricky Carmichael and Ivan Tedesco.  Although Ivan Tedesco’s accomplishments shouldn’t go unnoticed, Ricky Carmichael is known as one of the best supercross riders of all times.  In fact, he has gone on to win a number of championships.  This popular and well performing rider is often compared to the great Jeremy McGrath.

In addition to Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki, Yamaha is another popular and well known manufacturer of off-road motorcycles. In fact, if you enjoy off-road biking at your home, there is a good chance that you own a Yamaha off-road motorcycle. Their motorcycles are often considered the most popular on the market. Aside from manufacturing a number of off-road motorcycles, Yamaha is also known as being a supercross motorcycle racing team. This team comprises of Chad Reed and Heath Voss.  Out of the two riders, Chad Reed is the most well known, not only in the United States, but all around the world.

As you may already know or assume, the riders of each time race a motorcycle from the team that they are with. For instance, Chad Reed, a member of Team Yamaha, races a Yamaha bike and so on.  These bikes are not always like the bikes that you can find at your local recreational sports store. In fact, many of these bikes are specialty bikes, made just for supercross motorcycle racing.  However, this does not mean that you will not have access to one of those bikes.  For example, Suzuki is currently offering a replica of Ricky Carmichael’s 2006 supercross bike. Many other motorcycle teams and companies are beginning to follow suit.

In addition to the above mentioned teams, you will also find that many of these teams and riders have different sponsors.  These sponsors tend to include those that sell racing parts, as well as everyday products, such as food or drinks. By familiarizing yourself with the most popular supercross motorcycle racing teams, you will be more informed, when it comes to exercising your knowledge of the sport.

Are You Interested in BMX Racing?

BMX racing is a fun sport for young people. For kids, the basic bike should have 20-inch wheels. Riders under age six can use whatever type of bike they have, even if it’s not a true BMX freestyle bike. These little folks might still be riding bikes with wheels as small as 12-inches. Some tracks even have races for Big Wheel bikes.

A cruiser or mountain bike with 24-inch or 26-inch wheels might be okay, too, but check ahead of time with your local track for advice. Many tracks will let you race a mountain bike in the “Cruiser” class.

Whatever bike you use should be equipped this way. Remove all reflectors. Take off the kickstand and chainguard to prevent injury in a wreck.

The bike should have pads on the top tube, stem and crossbar. Most BMX freestyle bikes already have these pads. If your bike doesn’t have them, adding this safety feature will cost about $5.

The bike should have at least one working brake. A coaster brake is fine if that’s all the bike has. The bike should be in safe working order.

Finally, tie a paper plate to the handlebars. This will be your number plate. When you get to the track, they’ll give you a number to put on it. That number will identify you to the judges and fans as you are racing.

Safety is important

For head protection, a helmet is essential. Depending on the track rules, this may need to be a full-face helmet or a helmet with a separate mouthguard. Other tracks will accept any type of inexpensive motocross-style helmet.

Wear protective clothing. Regular long pants or jeans will protect the rider’s legs. For arm protection, wear a long-sleeved shirt. Since riders will use their feet, they should wear good sturdy shoes they are comfortable riding in.

Although you can race without gloves, wearing them is a good idea. Be sure they fit well and don’t interfere with moving your hands. Finally, bring bike tools and an air pump in case repairs are needed.

Ready to race

To race, a potential rider needs to find a track. Local bike shops may have information on where the nearest track is. Otherwise visit the National Bicycle League (NBL) or American Bicycle Association (ABA) websites. These are the sanctioning bodies of BMX racing. They provide advice and insurance to local tracks. As an NBL or ABA member, you will have some medical insurance if you get hurt on the track during a race and do not have other insurance.

A parent or guardian must accompany the rider to give permission for the child to race. A birth certificate must be shown as proof of age. Most tracks charge between $15 and $35 for a racing license that is licenses good for a year. There is also an entry fee for each race, which is usually between $6 and $10.

For your first visit to a particular track, get there about two hours before the first race starts. Find the registration tent or trailer and sign up.

Then take a walk around the track. Try to remember where the jumps are. Next it’s time to practice. Put your helmet and other gear on and follow the others to the starting gate. Watch what everyone else does and where they go. A beginner should put his front wheel against the starting gate, keeping one foot on a pedal and the other one on the ground. Start pedaling when the gate drops. Go slow the first few times until you feel comfortable.

After practice, the races will be posted. The people at the registration tent can tell you where your particular race will be posted and how the race actually works. You will be in a group or “moto” with other riders about your age. Line up with them in the staging area. When your group is called, go up and race! This will probably happen three or four times, depending on the system the track uses, and then it will be over. If you win, you might get a trophy. Even if you don’t, you’ll have fun.

The Future of Racing Bikes

Road bikes or racing bikes are designed to go as fast as possible while making sure of the rider’s safety. They are mostly featured as skeletons of bicycles, but there is a reason why it looks so bare. This is because everything is toned down in order to save weight and improve aerodynamics, which is crucial if you want to go as fast as you can. These two factors will help give more speed. There are many gears for the racing bikes, but they are clustered together so that the biker can choose immediately which gear to use for the occasion. Its riding position is hunched over to offer less wind resistance. Some will favor drop handlebars, which will cost the rider to hunch over more. The tires are very thin and very high pressured, and one mistake on a hole can puncture it.

Types of Racing Bikes

There are several types of racing bikes. The most common is the standard racing bike, which is perfect for road riding. The riding position is hunched over, but still high enough which enables the rider to see where he is going. It is also very fast.

Another would be the time trial bike, which is designed to go as fast as possible around a circuit or an oval on a closed-off road. The riders are very much hunched over. Some would prefer the use of extensions on the handlebars for added comfort, to get a better grip on the handles and to get their hands forward. Others would still attach smaller front wheels to modify the riding position to something even lower than the usual.

Another would be the track racing bike, which is raced indoors on oval circuits. There is a single fixed gear with no brakes. A rider can only stop by slowing down the way he pedals, and the gear makes it impossible to suddenly stop pedaling. This racing bike is stripped down to the absolute minimum with no extras to make it lighter and faster.

Remarks for the Racing Bikes

On the plus side, racing bikes are very fast. The slick tires offer very little drag on the road, and the aerodynamic position keeps the wind drag to a minimum. On the other hand, because the bicycle is very skinny, it is often called as uncomfortable by other riders. The tires do not absorb much of the vibration when it comes to rough surfaces, and the hunched-over position can be very painful to the neck, back, and wrists.

Whatever your speed thrill though, the racing bike will probably outstrip it. Racing bikes are fast, light, and very versatile. They can pass through very narrow places and leave that police car in the dust. If ever things get sticky, racing bike rider will just pull his throttle downward, and the next you will see is the dust in your eyes.

Buying Racing Bikes

If you are interested in buying a racing bike, you can look for websites offering such in the Internet. You can also look at newspaper ads and bicycle magazines. They feature racing bikes for sale that there will so many for you to choose from. You have to remember though that if you are going to buy it online, you should check first if the website is legitimate so as not to waste money.
