The diversity of Africa attractions, the awe-inspiring natural beauty and the intense creativity of African people has once again brought an even that brings pride and admiration to Africa.

One of these events is ‘The Cycle with the Rhino’ – a spectacular and unique sporting-cum-fundraising event that takes place in the Lake Nakuru National Park. This bicycle racing sport is one of the world most interesting event thanks, to the fact that it is done inside a densely populated wildlife national park.

This year marked the 6th event of the cycle with rhinos and the experience was greatly widespread. The organizers of this year’s event choose a new route incorporating the old route with another stretch that saw the cyclist race through the patched community land parcels.

The race was flagged off from the sloppy nice-lawn corridor patched with young acacia trees by the Director of Kenya Wildlife Service Mr. Julius Kipng’etich. This followed a tasking pedaling through the magnificent shade of canopied acacia branches. The conducive weather conditions saw cyclists enjoy a cool breeze along the shoe before proceeding to the open community land.

The climax turf was climbing to the top of Flamingo Hill also know as Honeymoon Hill. Some cyclists opted to shoulder their bikes while others pushed them hard, while others jogged to the top in ambition of touching the line first.

The event is held every September and it involves great passion and excitement among the participants. Whether cheering or cycling, you will get to enjoy the scenery and also view game in their natural habitat. The Cycle with the Rhino event is organized in collaboration with various organizations, local and international cyclists and the local business community.

Racing has taken a number of different forms, including foot, dog, horse, airplane, boat, car, motorcycle and bicycle. The object in any form of racing is to win. Being the fastest is what makes a champion. Coming in second rarely counts.

We know from painted pottery that the foot race was a popular event with the ancient Greeks. Today there are both indoor and outdoor forms of foot racing. The most common forms of racing are sprints, hurdles and relays. Distances of the races vary. The first marathon race in modern times was organized in 1896. It was approximately 22 miles in distance. Today, the marathon is around 24 miles. The first Olympic marathon for women was held in 1928. Today, there are many different marathons, usually organized by a specific charity, such as breast cancer, within a city.

Horse racing has also been around for centuries. The ancient Romans and Egyptians had a fascination for chariot racing. It continues to this day, although it is referred to as horse and buggy racing. There is also thoroughbred racing, with a trained rider (jockey) on a saddle on the horse’s back. One of the most popular forms of horse racing in the United States is the Triple Crown, made up of three separate races in different locations: The Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. There are also races in which the horse must jump over obstacles set up on a measured track.

Bicycle racing is an Olympic sport today. The first known race was held in Paris in 1865. There are many forms of bicycle racing today, including on and off road, mountain bike, track, BMX and cycle speedway. One of the best known races is the Tour de France. American cyclist Lance Armstrong has won this event seven times.

Automobile racing began in 1894 and has continued in various forms until the present. The races usually depend on the distance travelled in particular types of cars. There is stock car, drag, rally, off road, sports car racing, Formula One (NASCAR) and other forms of racing. While distance is a factor in racing, speed is usually still the most important factor. The fastest speed recorded at the Indianapolis 500 was achieved by Eddie Cheever in 1996 when his race car reached 236.103 miles per hour.

Motorcycle racing is an enormously popular sport, and, like automobile racing, it comes in a variety of forms, including drag, sidecar, and supercross. There is also motocross racing, an amateur level sport. WERA is the national organization for the advancement, operation and sanctioning of motorcycle road racing. WERA sponsors sprint and distance races.

The first aircraft race was held in 1909, six years after the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane. It was held in Reims, France, and covered the distance from France to England. A race from England to Australia was instituted later, with most of the entrants being commercial airliners. It was discontinued after the outbreak of World War Two. In the United States, the National and Cleveland Air Races were initiated in the 1920s. In 1929, the Women’s Air Derby was created as part of the National Air Races. Today the Red Bull Air Race World Series is held annually. It features 11 pilots who compete against time on two passes over the designated course.

Ships and boats have long been used as racing vehicles. There have been some unusual races as well. Even bathtubs have been used in racing events. Depending on the type of propulsion used, aquatic races vary in time and speed.

“Gentlemen start your engines” those four words excite race fans everywhere. We here in Florida are lucky to have several venues where those words are spoken but none more famously crowd pleasing then our own Daytona Speedway.

Daytona Speedway has many different kinds of races throughout the year for many different kinds of race fans. Bike Week and Biketoberfest, held in the winter and fall respectively, feature mostly motorcycle races and shows; then in the winter again Speed Week happens and other popular races such as the Rolex 24 hour race and the Daytona 500 are run.

Now, NASCAR was born from stock car racing which was born from boot legging in the Appalachians during prohibition. Bootleggers, as they were called, needed fast car to outrun the cops as they made their deliveries, many drivers did their own modification to their cars to increase the cars speed and handling. It all started back in 1947 when a gentleman named William France Sr. and some friends founded a small organization they called NASCAR.

When prohibition ended in 1933 the need for bootleggers dried up but some of these guys came to love the speed and excitement of driving down twisty mountain roads. They continued to work on and improve their cars and by the late 1940’s the races for bragging rights and money began. These races were held mostly in rural North Carolina run using modified street cars.

Daytona Beach didn’t sit idly by while all this was going on. In 1903 there was a historic race run between Ransom Olds and Alexander Winton on the beach here that started it all. Between 1905 and 1935 fifteen speed records were set and the Daytona Beach road course, as it came to be known, became a Mecca for racing enthusiasts. Daytona Beach became known as the place to set world speed records in the 1920s and 1930s,

In the 1920s and 1930s, Daytona Beach became known as the place to set world land speed records, supplanting France and Belgium as the preferred location for speed records, with 8 consecutive world records set between 1927 and 1935, Daytona Beach had become synonymous with fast cars. Daytona is also one of the best Florida beaches to take a trip with beaches to drive on and plenty of lifeguards and people to watch.

These days Daytona still means speed no matter if you prefer motorcycles or cars. During Bike Week you can enjoy all sorts of weight class and engine size motorcycling races. In the fall they also have motor bike races, classes that you can sign up to take and exhibition and proto type motorcycles, both weeks feature amateur and pro series.

There are several events throughout the year that the Daytona International Speedway is known for, one such event is the Rolex 24. The Rolex 24 is a race that lasts 24 hours; teams of drivers take shifts behind the wheel and drive all day and night racing towards the finish line, I’ve been its fun. You wouldn’t think people would stay for the whole race but they do, there are fun things to do around the infield during the race to that helps.

Speed Week is another draw to the Speedway it’s the start of the ARCA series and NASCAR season. There are two events that kick off the season; first event is the ARCA series Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200, a 80 lap 200 mile race.

The Budweiser Shootout features top NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stars racing around the 31-degree high banks. From there we go onto the biggie, the main event – The Daytona 500. There are two days of qualifying events for the Daytona 500, the first is just called Daytona 500 Qualifying where qualifying for the front row takes place. The second is the Gatorade Duel which consists of two 150-mile qualifying races that determine the starting lineup for the Daytona 500.

There are also several truck races and events that take place during the week but theses are the main racing events. Then at week after the qualifying events the Daytona 500 is run. The Daytona 500 is run for 200 laps, 500 miles on the two and a half a mile long track of the Daytona International Speedway and it’s considered the biggest, richest and most prestigious race of the NASCAR series. Touted as “The Great American Race” families save of all year and make the week their traditional family vacation. Pack those coolers, grab those ear plugs and race on down for some good old fashion family fun things to do in Daytona Beach. I’ve been to the infield after Speed Week and have been amazed by all the things left behind, arm chairs, sofas and all sorts of other things, it’s an awesome sight.

Another fan favorite race is run on the 4th of July the Coke Zero 400 this is also a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race that is run for 160 laps, 400 miles. After the race they normally have fireworks and there are fun things for the whole family to do all day.

1.Not choosing a budget and sticking to it.

Some people make the basic mistake of spending too much for their bike then not having enough to buy the basic accessories associated with most bikes.

You can ride these on a racing bike or more specialized time trial bikes are available.

5.Incorrect choice of handlebar width.

Mostly overlooked by first time purchasers of racing bikes, the width of the handlebars determine the way you breath and also climb on your bike.

If your bars are too narrow for you then you will restrict your breathing due to your hands and arms are closer together. If they are too wide then your control over the bike will be poor. Please look at the websites in section 2 to achieve your perfect riding position.

To ride a racing bike uphill you will need to be out of the saddle, your weight on the pedals and hands pulling hard on the bars. Getting into good habit of cleaning your bike after each ride not only reflects on you as a responsible and safe cyclist but also you can spot potential worn parts such as brake bocks, tyres and lose cables etc.

Don’t leave your bike to rust after a ride, if you have ridden in the wet then spray all the moving parts like the chain, brakes, gears and exposed cables with a good lubricant like GT88 or WD40. Leave for a few hours then wash off with warm soapy water. Its easier to do this than trying to wash off rust or mud and road dirt from your bike. Apply a litle car polish to the frame and buff to a shine, this will protect the frame and make washing off the mud and road dirt.

Also think about your future use of the bike, you may want to sell it, part exchange for a new model or keep it as a second training bike.

8.One overlooked mistake most people make is to not insure their bike for damage and theft.

It doesn’t matter if you just use your bike on the odd sunny day or you train everyday and race on the weekend. To insure your bike is not expensive, you could have it as part of your contents insurance at home or take out a separate insurance. 9.Not getting a price comparisons between different bikes.

10.Not taking a specialised approach with your new sport.

Why not build your own bike? Buy the exact frame you want and the other parts. Don’t make the major mistake of attempting for the first time to assemble the bike yourself. Ask your local bike shop to do this for you, it will cost between £50 and £100, but, its well worth the money to get it right first time.

11.Not getting the right choice of wheels and tires to be able to road race at a reasonable standard it will be a good idea to invest in a good set of wheels. Ideally carbon rims and with tubular tires, these are tires and inner tubes all in one tube. They are glued to the wheel rim with a special adhesive. These tires can be inflated to 200 ponds per square inch.

This combination of wheel and tubular set up is expensive. A more cost effective solution is to use the wheels that have been supplied with your new racing bike and invest in the best set of racing tires you can afford.

The difference between the tires can be significant, from the side walls of the tire being too soft for your weight or not providing a better rolling resistance. Think about a puncture resistant tape fitted between the inner tube and tire. Tire pressure will have to be checked each time before you go out on your bike. This will give you the benefit of not only a comfortable ride but also to get the full life from your tire. Its easy to check the recommended tire pressure, just look on the side walls, it will state the tire size and then the maximum pressure to be inflated.

Practice changing your inner tube so that you know what to expect when repairing a puncture on the road. Always take care to check for sharp stones, glass or thorns on the tire before refitting your inner tube.

If you have been looking to try something new, you may want to consider giving supercross motorcycle racing a shot. In fact, you may very well find that it is a fun and exciting sport to not only watch, but also to participate in.

Supercross motorcycle racing was derived from motocross racing. Motocross racing involves the use of an off-road bike and an off-road course. The only difference between supercross and motocross is that supercross tracks are often indoors, while motocross tracks are outdoors. For that reason, the size of the tracks also tends to vary; motocross tracks are usually longer. With both supercross and motocross, off-road riders race with their bikes over an off-road, but man-made course. This course is often filled with a number of different obstacles, including small jumps. When racing, whether it be in supercross or motocross, the goal is to finish in first place.

One of the reasons why you may enjoy or benefit from participating in supercross motorcycle racing, or even motocross racing, is because of all that you will learn. Maneuvering an off-road motorcycle, especially over a man-made course, is something that is hard to do. With a little bit of hard work, determination, and practice, you should be able to do it. However, like any other difficult sport or activity, you will find that supercross motorcycle racing, as well as motocross racing, takes a lot of trial and error. That trial and error will allow you to determine what does and does not work for you and your bike.

Perhaps, the greatest benefit of participating in supercross motorcycle racing, or even motocross racing, is the excitement. As previously mentioned, supercross motorcycle racing, as well as motocross racing, is considered action packed. The racing part, alone, is enough to cause excitement, but that is not all there is to the sport. Once you become a supercross or a motocross rider, whether it be professional or not, you will be able to race against competitors and compete on unique, but exciting tracks. Supercross and motocross racing tracks not only give you a racing surface, but they also give you a surface that allows you to showcase your off-road maneuvering skills.

Although supercross motorcycle racing has it advantages, there are disadvantages as well. One of those disadvantages is the ability to find a supercross track. As previously mentioned, supercross tracks are, almost always, located indoors. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to afford an indoor track. That is why motocross was mentioned numerous times above. If you are looking to become a professional supercross racer, or even devote time to the amateur circuits, you may want to get your start in motocross racing. There is a better chance that you have access to a motocross track than a supercross track. Racing at a motocross track, if you have to, should be able to help you develop skills that can be used indoors.

The above mentioned benefits are just a few of the many that there are to supercross, or even motocross racing. If you have a love for the sport or the excitement of it, there is a good chance that you will enjoy off-road racing, whether that off-road racing be on a supercross track, a motocross track, or even in your own backyard.
