About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a weird and unusual cat-size animal–the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.

The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).

In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.

In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more vital, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose’s brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was bought by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

Customer Reviews

By Todd Thomas (Jacksonville FL)
Well, after a long time of researching various bikes, I bought this one. I couldn’t find another bike that looked as excellent, or had as many of the same features as this bike, at the same price point. The bike came mainly assembled, took about an hour to assemble fully and adjust everything to my liking. Took it for a ride and everything works perfectly.

The bike looks like I spent a helluva lot more than I did too. Only thing is the seat is a bit uncomfortable, I’ll be replacing it soon, but you can say that about most bikes.

By M. Gravitt (Springfield, MO)
For [...] you can’t beat this bike! Granted, it’s not near as light as the bike shop mountain bikes, but it’s also a fifth of the price. I couldn’t find another bike for under [...] that had dual suspension AND dual disc-brakes. Now, the partial assembly could have been better, though. Out of the box, the front fork was on backwards, and the derailleurs were really out of tune! But the front fork was as simple as loosening the nut and turning it around, and the local bike shop tuned the derailleurs for [...] so I now have an awesome bike for right at [...] Overall a fantastic buy!

Shimano Mountain Bike Shoes Can Help Improve Your Ride

Many new bicycle riders start off with a decent mountain bike. They wear ordinary sports clothing, and start cycling straight away. Unfortunately, they didn’t know that they can save energy and ride quicker and quicker just by making a small adjustment to their clothing – and that is by wearing mountain bike shoes such as those provided by Shimano.

Shimano is a well trusted brand in the bicycling community. They have been around for years and the engineers know all the ins and outs of bicycle engineering. They have also been able to stay on top of technology developments and managed to design some fantastic products. The Shimano pedaling system (also known as SPD) is just one such example.

Why your pedaling is so vital in your riding.

Your mountain bike, in the simplest sense, is a machine that helps to transfer power from your legs to speed on the trail. The component that is responsible for power transfer? The pedals. On normal flat pedals, most of the power that is used comes from the down stroke – i.e. you are pushing down as your pedal. Unfortunately, most of the power on the up stroke (pulling up) is lost.

So a new pedaling system is invented to overcome this problem – the clipless pedals. The clipless pedaling system is known as “clipless” because there is a need to differentiate between the new clipping system and the older toe clip system. So if you see “clipless”, it refers to the new pedaling technology.

How the clipless system works.

The pedaling system works by having special pedals and cycling shoes that are able to click together. When attached, the rider is able to transfer energy on the up stroke to the bike so small energy is lost during the process.

Clipless shoes and pedals are all about energy efficiency. Many riders swear that when they ride with clipless shoes, they can improve their overall speed by 5% or more. In other words, there is a 5% energy efficiency. If you rider small distances (e.g. 5km), a 5% reduction probably doesn’t amount to much. But, if you are joining races or running distances as long as 100km, 5% can mean a huge difference.

Note that both road and mountain bikes have bicycling shoes, but they are different in terms of design. Mountain bike shoes have recessed clips, wheres road shoes have protruding clips. Many riders who own both a mountain and road bike prefer to wear mountain bike shoes because they can also walk in them. Besides, mountain bike shoes look more normal if you are just out cycling casually with a group of friends.

For new cyclists, a excellent pedaling system is a must. With the feet attached to the pedals, new riders can get a better feel of how it is like to pedal efficiently.

Why we Need to Develop Mountain Biking Trails in Thailand

Why we Need to Develop Mountain Biking Trails in Thailand

The potential for MTB in Thailand is endless. Bangkok itself and the surrounding provinces like Nonthaburi, Suphanburi and Ayutthaya are ultra flat but travel just a couple of hours in any direction and the mountainous terrain is incredible. Unfortunately for most Bangkokians don’t even know what all mountain or downhill mountain biking is all about and although I don’t want to knock XC MTBers the locals spend most of their biking time riding on flat dull dirt roads traveling as slow as possible and stopping now and again to point at and pick fruit from trees.

As well as these flat dirt roaders there are others that reckon mountain biking means riding a mountain bike on tarmac roads dressed in their best Sunday spandex with racing slicks on their 24,000 baht Mavic Crossmax, when it would be honest to say that that’s road biking and you can use a sports cycle with rigid forks for that.

Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand is the established Mecca of downhill mountain biking. With a handful of downhill and all mountain trails, fantastic trails but still none of which are of a world-class standard. The hype for most mountain bikers who travel to Chiang Mai to have a go at the trails there is simply to say that they had a go at the sport in a country warm enough to call it jungle single track.

With tourism at a 49 years low in the kingdom it would be fantastic to see the MTB Tour companies who operate in Chiang Mai and its surrounding areas investing more time developing tracks and promoting the sport more with XC and downhill races and maybe some even some 4x and slope style competitions.

The 2007 Asean Downhill competition was held near Lam Tha Khong Dam on the outskirts of Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Rachasima Province which gave mountain bikers in Central Thailand some hope that the sport had reached a new level and more trails would be built but after a visit to the site where the event was held just a few months after the trail had gone back to being an unused overgrown path and the locals had forgotten all about it.

There is some fantastic potential for mountain biking trails in Central Thailand too but the locals and expats who live there don’t seem to get the time or feel the need to go out and build more trails just keep riding the same ancient trails at Khao I-to in Prachinburi and Tamp Pra Toon in Chonburi. Again, these are two fantastic trails to get your teeth into but become dull for the people who ride them all the time and are quite hard for those who are just getting into the sport with their awkward and steep uphill sections being very punishing in the hotter months.

What mountain bikers in Thailand want to see is more purpose built trails developed in the area. Locations such as Kanchanaburi, Phetchaburi and Khao Yai would be perfect locations for mountain bikers in the country to get together and develop some world-class trails with manageable uphill sections and fantastic downhill sections to cater for all MTB disciplines.

M.T. Hill Tours encourages the growth of Mountain Biking and Eco-tours in Thailand and our Mountain Bike Tours Thailand website is a free information site with free GPS waypoints for all central Thailand trails and information about mountain biking in central Thailand and Chiang Mai. Our all new English MTB forum has been set up to encourage groups of mountain bikers to get together and help to develop new mountain bike trails all over the country.

Adventure With A Mountain Bike

Mountain bike is particularly designed to be used for off-road biking that may include jumps, steep turn downs, dirt tracks, unpaved and logging roads etc. These are typically used to cope efficiently with the obstacles like rocks, stones or logs. Wheels that are inserted in these bikes have bent tires that allow additional traction as well as absorb any shock that may result due to uneven roads or tracks. In mountain or hill climbing these bikes are commonly used.

In older times, the rise of sports events and contributions in climbing competitions gave rise to these bikes. The word mountain bike was firstly used in 1966. In 1970s and 1980s, road bikes companies started manufacturing these bikes at large scale with the rise of its demand.

Designs of these bikes depend on suspension. Four vital categories include fully rigid, hard tail, soft tail and full suspension bikes.

As far as types of mountain bikes are considered, there are several types that are designed to cope with different obstacles and terrain. Each type has its own advantages and drawbacks. Moreover, the first thing to remember while selecting a mountain bike is to know exactly where you are going to ride this and what hurdles you may face. Some vital types include,

Mountain bikes – cross country category that are specially designed for off-road tracks. These may tackle low to moderate hurdles. Light weight material is used in their formation to ensure quick speed.

Hard tail bikes are made of more improved material and have shock absorbing character. These bikes are sturdier and need less maintenance as compared to full suspension bikes.

Full suspension bikes looks like a motor cycle. They have more weight but offer comfortable riding. These bikes are useful on saddle climbs.

Trail mountain bikes have flexible suspension to tackle harder obstructions. But, it has a drawback that paddling requires more force and effort.

Down hill mountain bikes are particularly designed for race tracks with steep slopes. These are suitable for racing. These may run quick when running down the hill but it is very hard and hard to use these bikes for climbing.
