BMX Bikes ? Lets Go Back In Time

Bicycle motocross racing, also known as BMX racing, has come a long way since it was first conceptualized. In fact, the humble origins of the sport are often cited as stemming from the motocross documentary, On Any Sunday, which opened in 1971. The opening scenes of that movie followed kids on their Schwinn Sting-Ray bicycles riding dirt tracks and imitating motocross riders.

Naturally, those scenes were based on something that was already transpiring. Generally it is recognized that BMX as a sport found its place in California. The bicycle races were predominantly composed of kids who had the desire to participate in motocross but could not afford it. Instead, these riders would groom their own dirt courses and use their bikes. Today’s BMX racing tracks, with inline starts and expressive obstacles, trace back to this origin.

Ever since the invention of the bicycle there were those who attempted innovations and tricks Majority of bikes, up until this point, were designed primarily as a means of transportation. Schwinn’s Sting-Ray changed that. The Sting-Ray was released in 1963 at a time when custom cars and motorbikes were becoming well loved. It was custom-built for riding off-road at high speeds and landing jumps. These bikes became well loved quick, and quickly became one of the best-selling bikes in the country. Afterward, more manufacturers took note and started designing bicycles with similar custom features, such as twenty-inch wheels.

While custom bikes kept on growing in popularity and design evolution, riders continued to test the limits of what they could do. As this trend continued into the 1980s, BMX came to be about more than just racing. Riders started to perform skateboard-style tricks, and this is how the freestyle division of BMX was born. As a result, new bikes were designed to provide optimal conditions for performing increasingly hard tricks.

As the 1990s came upon us, the sport was nearly ubiquitous. BMX was featured as a major part of the X-Games on ESPN. That trend has continued to the present day, where BMX racing is larger than ever. The sport has grown to have its own international governing body, and BMX races took place as an Olympic sport for the first time in 2008.

Together with the sport, the bikes themselves have continued to evolve. Anyone interested in BMX biking today has a high and diverse number of bikes available. Which bike is best for you depends on how you plot to ride.

For small, BMX bikes are basically a type of mountain bike designed to excel on off-road surfaces. These bikes feature 18- to 24-inch wheels and are designed to be lightweight and durable. Their design makes them particularly suited for racing and tricks.

Really there are three forms of BMX racing, with specially designed bikes in each category; namely, racing, freestyle and jumping bikes. Whether you want to race competitively or just have fun on homemade trails, these categories can still be helpful for determining which kind of bike is best for you.

BMX racing designs evolved specifically with the thought of speed in mind. They are composed of lightweight frames and feature customized tires designed to excel on off-road surfaces.

Bikes for freestyle riding are very sturdy, with thick frames and pavement-ready BMX tires. These bikes are best for riding in skate parks, where you can learn and practice stunts and tricks.

Ultimately, jump bikes feature strong, sturdy frames, capable suspension systems and knobby tires. As the name suggests, they are meant to handle jumps comfortably, whether that be as part of a circuit or a homemade jump in the backyard. These bikes are also excellent on trails.

Should you be just starting out riding off-road at high speeds, then you may want to start with a racing BMX, as these allow you to get out on the track and will have you learning the basics in no time. It is also never a terrible thought to contact your local bike shop to get advice on which bike will work for your purposes and with your build.

Additionally, to these categories, bicycle customization is becoming more widely accessible. This allows you to tailor your bike to your specific racing and aesthetic desires. Whether you want a bike you can occasionally take off-road at high speeds, or you are looking to become a devoted BMX racer, today’s BMX rider has more biking options available than ever before.

Bmx Bikes

BMX Bikes are bicycles designed specially for racing on hilly and sandy tracks. Apart from racing on undulating terrains, bikers also perform tricks on flat grounds, trails and wooden ramps. Not too long ago, bikes were manufactured with an assembled frame and fork, with two wheels and a seat. BMX bicycles originated in the state of California in the late 60’s, but it was not before the beginning of 1961, that the bikes achieved popularity, and the manufacturers started to produce bicycles frequently. BMX stunts and tricks are presently extremely well loved among teenagers. There is a plethora of clubs and organizations where people can come and try their hands out on the BMX bicycles and practice the skills and tricks. With these early practices, the young bikers get acquainted with the possible problems that may occur during the ramp performances.

Tricks are certainly not simple for any biker. The stunts extremely tough to perform. One should go through tough rehearsals, in order to be completely ready. Some of the challenging tricks are like standing on the front pegs, and spinning the rest of the bike around. The really skillful bikers can even summersault in air. These tricks can be gripped after a long practice session. While riding the BMX bikes, you would need ample protection. You must protect your elbows, knees and most importantly your head with the helmet. If you are interested in having a first look at the toughest BMX competitions, then the X games on various sports channels can help you.

The main features of a BMX bike are straight tubes, gusseted frames, reinforced handlebars, powerful mag wheels, long crankarms ,steel rims and coaster brakes.

The BMX bike producers manufacture bikes with light body. The body of a BMX bike is made of aluminum or chromium and molybdenum for frames and steel for the rims. Aluminum is used also for rims, freewheels and caliper brakes. The 24-inch versions of these bikes are called ‘cruisers’. The frames on BMX bicycles are made to be very light and maneuvered accordingly, therefore, it can weather the blows while racing and jumping. Furthermore, a light bike can save your minutes, in a tight fought BMX race.

The tiers of BMX bicycles are completely different from the road bikes. They are knobby with brilliant traction and power. Another aspect that distinguishes the BMX tires from the others is the construction of their wheels. The rims are of 20 inches generally, but there can be different sizes as well.

From time to time the BMX bicycles fall hard on the ground, which is why the manufacturers have introduced ‘Cro Moly’ tube sets to the bikes. A BMX bike with smaller gear set-ups minimizes the weight of the bikes by using chain rings, smaller rear drivers, and shorter length of chain. BMX bicycles sales are much higher than the other ones. Bikes can be seen with every fashionable bike rider, on sidewalks and in their natural habitat. As opposed to competing, a simple ride would be much more comfortable. While riding, but, you have to be very conscious, and should not make too much experiments with your tricks. Don not forget to wear a helmet whenever riding. The BMX bicycles are both, fashionable and powerful, providing you the ultimate passion for fashionable biking.

The Future of Racing Bikes

Road bikes or racing bikes are designed to go as quick as possible while making sure of the rider’s safety. They are mostly featured as skeletons of bicycles, but there is a reason why it looks so bare. This is because everything is toned down in order to save weight and improve aerodynamics, which is crucial if you want to go as quick as you can. These two factors will help give more speed. There are many gears for the racing bikes, but they are clustered together so that the biker can choose immediately which gear to use for the occasion. Its riding position is hunched over to offer less wind resistance. Some will favor drop handlebars, which will cost the rider to hunch over more. The tires are very thin and very high pressured, and one mistake on a hole can puncture it.

Types of Racing Bikes

There are several types of racing bikes. The most common is the standard racing bike, which is perfect for road riding. The riding position is hunched over, but still high enough which enables the rider to see where he is going. It is also very quick.

Another would be the time trial bike, which is designed to go as quick as possible around a circuit or an oval on a closed-off road. The riders are very much hunched over. Some would prefer the use of extensions on the handlebars for added comfort, to get a better grip on the handles and to get their hands forward. Others would still attach smaller front wheels to modify the riding position to something even lower than the usual.

Another would be the track racing bike, which is raced indoors on oval circuits. There is a single fixed gear with no brakes. A rider can only stop by slowing down the way he pedals, and the gear makes it impossible to suddenly stop pedaling. This racing bike is stripped down to the absolute minimum with no extras to make it lighter and quicker.

Remarks for the Racing Bikes

On the plus side, racing bikes are very quick. The slick tires offer very small drag on the road, and the aerodynamic position keeps the wind drag to a minimum. On the other hand, because the bicycle is very skinny, it is often called as uncomfortable by other riders. The tires do not absorb much of the vibration when it comes to rough surfaces, and the hunched-over position can be very painful to the neck, back, and wrists.

Whatever your speed thrill though, the racing bike will probably outstrip it. Racing bikes are quick, light, and very versatile. They can pass through very narrow places and leave that police car in the dust. If ever things get sticky, racing bike rider will just pull his throttle downward, and the next you will see is the dust in your eyes.

Buying Racing Bikes

If you are interested in buying a racing bike, you can look for websites offering such in the Internet. You can also look at newspaper ads and bicycle magazines. They feature racing bikes for sale that there will so many for you to choose from. You have to remember though that if you are going to buy it online, you should check first if the website is legitimate so as not to waste money.
