Countries such as the United States, Canada and Europe have in the past passed legislation in regard to electric bicycles. These are recognized by most jurisdictions as being distinct from the existing motorcycle and moped classifications due to the fact that they are more related to bicycles rather than their bigger cousins. Although national laws do define electric bikes, confusion still persists. In Canada and the United States, the existing national laws define the required safety equipment for every electric bicycle, although it is the role of the provinces and State to determine whatever is legal in regard to use of electric bicycles on roads.

In North Wales, the motor bicycles that are motor assisted with petrol or electric engines only require registration if the maximum output of the engine is more than 200 watts.  Cycle riders who are exempted from registration are required to follow similar rules like those meant for cycles that lack motors as well as vehicles that require registration. In Victoria, a bicycle whose design requires human power to propel it through pedals may be incorporated with an attached petrol or electric powered motor. However, the power output of the motor must not be more than 200 watts. 

The safety regulations for motor vehicles in Canada have defined bicycles that are power assisted. These bicycles consist of 2 or 3 wheels with an attachment of a 500 watts electric motor or less.  This electric motor has the capability of being manually propelled.  Furthermore, the set safety requirements are met by following certain regulations which include; whenever muscular power engages the electric bicycle, it is required to cease assistance whenever the muscular power stops. Both require a maximum 500 watt power engines and their speed should not be more than 20 mph (32 km/h). Both the electric assisted bicycle and the power cycle require helmets and are both regarded as bicycles whose users should conform to the road rules.

The Race

The first time I participated in a multisport event, it was a duathlon. A duathlon event consists of a run, a bike ride, and a run again.

I thought I can finish the race in the top half of the group with a mediocre road bike. It was an aluminum bike with 25c wheels, and weighs a grand total of 11.5 kilos. But I didn’t know all that then.

When I arrived at the event, I saw many participants come with fanciful bikes. Their wheels look different and some were so narrow that I wasn’t sure how the rider could maintain his balance on them.

I later learned that those bikes were carbon fiber bikes. Carbon fiber is an extremely light and stiff material that is widely used for manufacturing super fast road bikes. Almost all the pro racers use carbon fiber bikes. But hey, I thought this was an amateur event. So what’s up with all the aggressiveness?

As it turned out, even a small event can be very competitive. Most of the participants want to do well in the event. Many are there just to try and beat their personal best.

On my cheap aluminum road bike (without clip pedals), I was able to cruise at a speed of 30 kph. But by the end of the bike ride, I had almost nothing left for the run! Many of the participants in the same age group were able to catch up with me in the final leg.

Being my first event, I didn’t know that the bike ride could take so much energy from me. The more experienced participants had much lighter bikes. Some carbon bikes can be as light as 7.5 kg. That’s 3 kilos lighter than my bicycle. In other words, I’m riding with a 3 kg handicap all along! In addition, some bikes have aerobars on them, which help the riders achieve a more aerodynamic position. They were just putting in half the effort and they could easily beat the speed that I was riding at.

Of course, I learned an awful lot from the event. I sold my aluminum bike, and bought a full carbon bike just to try things out for myself. I was surprised to find that instead of cruising at 30 kph, I can easily cruise at 35 kph with the same effort. On top of that, my top speed is now way faster. The handling feels much more natural, and the pedaling is certainly more efficient. The carbon forks are able to transfer a huge percentage of my energy into the wheels, which results in a forward motion. And that’s what you’re looking for in a good bike. You want the maximum power transfer. You can never achieve the same results on a poorly engineered bicycle.

So you want to beat yourself (or beat others)? Then perhaps it’s time to make an investment.

The BMX is an adventure sport and the BMX bikes are made according to the requirements for it. In this sport the bikes have to undergo extreme conditions of stress and strains and therefore the parts of these bikes should have sufficient strength in order to measure upto such extreme conditions. Though, the parts of the BMX bikes are similar to the common bikes there are some differences in their features.

All the parts of the BMX bikes have been designed so as to be light weight and in addition to this they also provide good strength. The parts as the seats or the pads and paddles should not be slippery and they user should feel comfortable while he is making use of them.

However, as these bikes have to bear extreme conditions of stress and strain some of their parts get damaged after using them for sometime. Therefore, various spare parts are available in the market. So that whenever you find the need to replace them you can easily get the parts.

The first thing that needs replacement after its use for sometime is the tire. You can get the BMX tires from the market. However you should remember that these tires should be broad ideally 20 inches, and they should have good grip on the ground. This is very important as in the BMX racing the danger that of the slipping of the racers is very high. In addition to this they tires should have tough rubber so that they will last for sometime. Or else they may burst due to the pressure when the rider jumps and lands on the ground.

Sometimes the need of replacing the complete tire can also occur. They are also available in the market. Before buying them you should take in to consideration that are made from good and rust proof metal. The spokes should have sufficient thickness. You will also find them as spare. The hub and the wheels should be good rotating.

The breaks are also the parts that get damaged after sometime. It is better to use the vertical pulling breaks for the BMX bikes. These breaks should have good pads so that they hold the rim efficiently. And in addition to this they also have to be strong enough. Otherwise there is always a danger that the pads may come out. The liver that pushes the pads on to the rim should have proper shape and therefore it should be efficient in pushing the pads in direct proportion to the applied pressure.

The next part that may need a replacement is the seat. As for the BMX racing the rider’s body is not able to remain in a constant position during the race the seats have to bear some pressure as the rider depends on them for remaining in one position. While replacing them you should remember that their shape should provide good support to the rider and they should also have good padding for his comfort.

These are some of the important parts that often need replacement. However, the other parts as the pads paddles, bearings and other parts of these bikes would also need replacement after use for sometime.
