Two Types of Electric Bicycles

The usage of electric bicycles is increasing day by day, like the price of fuels, since electric bicycles have a lot of advantages over other types of vehicles. The working of electric bicycles is much the same way as an ordinary bicycle except that it is fitted with a small electric motor that is powered by a rechargeable battery.

Basically, electric bicycles can be of two types, pedal activated and throttle activated. As the name itself suggests, pedal activated electric bicycles are activated by pedaling and are helpful in commuting long distances and excellent for exercising, too. In the throttle activated type, the motor is activated by a handle bar mounted throttle. Electric bicycles are available in various styles, frame sizes, components and speed. The batteries required are also of different types like lead acid, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion battery-the choice of the battery depends upon the terrain to be used and the weight of the rider.

The most vital advantage of electric bicycle is that they are nearly zero emission vehicles and thus, eco friendly. They also do no emit noise and help to reduce noise pollution. The recharging of battery takes only a few hours and is affordable.

People who want to commute on a small non- polluting vehicle prefer electric bicycles. They   are loved by those who wish to travel outdoors to do a small bit of exercising. Electric bicycles are also preferred to cars in the sense that the user need not search for a place to park the vehicle in the congested traffic, when shopping is done for one or two items. Electric bicycles are also used by children and students who like to go for a joy ride around the town or parks.

Normally, the speed of the electric bicycle is around 25 to 30 kilometers per hour, which is certainly quicker than walking or even traveling by a car in a busy road which is fully laden with traffic. Electric bicycles can be bought online too, from the convenience of the home. The maintenance cost of this bicycle is nearly nil. There are electric bicycles that are solar charged, too.

An ordinary bicycle can also be upgraded to an electric bicycle by just fitting a motor kit that is designed for this purpose. The main purpose of fitting a motor for an electric bicycle is to preserve the energy of the cyclist, as also increase the speed of the cycle and thus make riding a convenient experience. Needless to say, electric bicycles are very efficient and useful and there is no reason why it should not be preferred to other forms of two wheelers.

Rules Governing the Use of Power Assisted Bicycles

Countries such as the United States, Canada and Europe have in the past passed legislation in regard to electric bicycles. These are recognized by most jurisdictions as being distinct from the existing motorcycle and moped classifications due to the fact that they are more related to bicycles rather than their larger cousins. Although national laws do define electric bikes, confusion still persists. In Canada and the United States, the existing national laws define the required safety equipment for every electric bicycle, although it is the role of the provinces and State to determine whatever is legal in regard to use of electric bicycles on roads.

In North Wales, the motor bicycles that are motor helped with petrol or electric engines only require registration if the maximum output of the engine is more than 200 watts.  Cycle riders who are exempted from registration are required to follow similar rules like those meant for cycles that lack motors as well as vehicles that require registration. In Victoria, a bicycle whose design requires human power to propel it through pedals may be incorporated with an attached petrol or electric powered motor. But, the power output of the motor must not be more than 200 watts.

The safety regulations for motor vehicles in Canada have defined bicycles that are power helped. These bicycles consist of 2 or 3 wheels with an attachment of a 500 watts electric motor or less.  This electric motor has the capability of being manually propelled.  Furthermore, the set safety requirements are met by following certain regulations which include; whenever muscular power engages the electric bicycle, it is required to stop help whenever the muscular power stops. If an accelerator controller is used for providing its power, then it should stop power at the moment of braking and thus be unable to provide help that is above 32km/h. It will hence bear a permanently affixed mark by the developer and appear in a location that is rather conspicuous stating that the vehicle is really a bicycle with power-help.

There are two categories of power-helped bicycles in Saskatchewan and they include;  a two or three wheeled bicycle that makes use of a motor and pedals simultaneously,  and a power cycle that uses motor only or either motor and pedals. Both require a maximum 500 watt power engines and their speed should not be more than 20 mph (32 km/h). If they were to exceed this speed, the electric motor would cut out or the cycle would simply be unable to go at this speed even on a surface that is level. Power cycles are required to adhere to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to ensure the bicycle is power helped. The power cycles are required to have a driver’s license for learner’s (class 7). Classes 1-5 are also permitted to operate under the same conditions. Both the electric helped bicycle and the power cycle require helmets and are both regarded as bicycles whose users should conform to the road rules.

Bicycles have been around for a very long time. In fact, bicycles have been around for so long that it is a very common tradition, especially in the United States of America, that one of the first thing that a young child is taught along with his or hers abcs and 123s is how to ride a bicycle.

As we get older, most people often lose interest in cycling. The thought of riding a bike becomes mere nostalgia of times when we were younger. But, if you stop to reckon about it, there are many benefits to riding a bicycle.

Health Benefits

The health benefits of riding a bicycle are tremendous. A daily or weekly regular exercise regime is hard to maintain because the lifestyles that we may have. Most of us have at least one full time job and many have families to take care of and spend time with in addition to secular work. Because we all have these type of mundane tasks, this makes it harder and harder to keep up with a regular exercise schedule.

Now, if you were to travel via bicycle, this can double as exercise. Depending on how quick you go, you may be able to get a fantastic cardio aerobic workout. If you cycle uphill and off-road, you may also be able to squeeze in some fitness training and strengthen your leg muscles.

Riding a bicycle in lieu of an automobile sometimes can afford you the time to get a work out. If you can set aside some time to cycle strictly for exercise, that can prove to be even more beneficial.

Financial Benefits

There are also financial benefits to riding bicycles. In this day and age, gas prices are on the rise and they continue to be priced higher and higher seemingly every single week. Some times the price of gas can be so financially taxing to people who are on a budget, that they have no other choice but to seek a cheaper alternative. Well, one fantastic alternative is cycling.

Regular, manual bicycles require absolutely no gas at all. All that is required is a small bit of leg muscle and elbow grease. If you live near your workplace or school, why not travel the gas-free way and cycle to your destination?

Eco Benefits

Go green by cycling! Because bicycles require no gas, they are eco-friendly. They do not cause pollution to be blown into the air nor do they release harmful toxins that may potentially cause health problems.

So, there you have it. Riding bicycles have physical, financial, and eco benefits. These reasons for cycling are fantastic, and the benefits can make you more pleased and healthier.
