If you are in France during the month of July and you are wondering about all the two-wheeling activity going on, don’t worry, it’s probably the Tour de France. The race continues for three weeks and attracts many cyclists from all over the world.

The race is divided into segments also known as stages. Each stage is day-long. The time taken to finish each stage is totaled to determine the winner at the end of race. The world’s most famous bicycle race Tour de France was started in 1903 by L’Auto newspaper. The course of Tour de France changes every year but there are few things which are certain. Such as the complete length of the race cannot exceed 3500 KM. There are also limitations on the number of KM covered in each stage. The race includes two days of rest. It ends in Paris after running its impressively scenic course throughout France and bordering countries.

The rider having the lowest aggregate time at end of each stage wears a yellow jersey also known as “maillot jaune”, riders having the most sprint points wears a green jersey also known as maillot vert and the king of mountains wears a polka dot jersey also called “maillot pois”. They are also awarded with the Prix de la Combativite for their chutzpah.

Lance Armstrong won seven consecutive races from 1999 to 2005 and is known as the legend of Tour de France. The prize money given to the winner is about 750,000 US Dollars.

Are you aware that cycling is one of the only 5 sports that was featured in all the modern Olympics?  Well it is.  Do you know that the record for most wins in the Tour de France was made by an American Lance Armstrong, having won 7 times?  Are you aware that the world’s oldest professional cyclist Dutchman Fred Rompelberg is also the holder of the Absolute Speed World Record Cycling?  These are just few facts relating to bicycle and professional cycling.  Though you may consider these fun facts to be trivial, you may find the most prestigious bicycle races in the world to be an important fact especially if you are someone who intends to join it or an avid follower of these races.

Bicycle racing is something that exists since middle of the 19th century.  It is only at the start of the 20th century though that it took the form that it has at present.  Some of the first bicycle races ever established still exist and are in fact considered to be the most prestigious worldwide.  Of the many bicycle races held yearly, few of the most famous are the Grand Tours, the Olympic races and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).  Fast gaining popularity are the cyclo-cross racing and the mountain bike racing.

The Grand Tours are made up of three world renowned races, the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia (or simply Giro) and the Vuelta a Espana.  Even non-cyclists have heard of the Tour de France, the most famous of the three.  This race, founded in 1903, takes three weeks to finish, is made up of 20 stages and covers about 2,000 miles.  The cyclist with the shortest time in each stage wins the race.

The cycling races held in the Olympics started as early as 1896.  Some of the cycling events have already been forgotten but new ones are now held.  Today’s Olympic games have bike competitors vie for road cycling, mountain bike races, track cycling, off-road competitions and BMX.  These races are fought according to gender and some are done in teams.

The UCI races are composed of several prestigious races that is popularly referred to as the UCI ProTour.  It replaced the UCI World Tour in 2005 and now includes the Grand Tours and other sought after cycling races such as the Criterium de Dauphine Libere, Paris Nice and Tour de Suisse and other one day races like the Clasica de San Sebastian, Milan-Sanremo, Ronde van Vlaanderen and other famous races.  Cycling is generally a summer sport and most of these races are held either in spring or in fall.

Off-Road Bike Racing and Preparation

It is no wonder that the writer Irish Murdoch said: “The bicycle is the most civilized conveyance known to man. Other forms of transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure in heart.” Bearing in mind that this quote comes from 1965 imagine what she would have said if she was writing today! The spirit of cycling is marvellous and nowadays there is a great range of cycling clothing to enhance the experience for enthusiasts.

For when the weather is not so pleasant, and let’s face it in the UK we are not blessed with a Mediterranean climate, it is best to dress yourself in a cycling jacket or a wool cycling jersey. This will keep you warm against the chilly air. However it is raining or there is rain expected then put on a windproof cycling jacket which will protect against both the rain and the wind. Match these up with some cycling pants, and some knee warmers or leg warmers. For rainy conditions you will also want to wear some waterproof gloves. There are also waterproof over-trousers that you can buy. Try to find ones that are adjustable with zip pockets and ankle gussets.

Buying cycling clothing regardless of the weather you will have comfort on your mind. The type of gear you choose may need to be influenced also by the type of cycling you are planning to do. For safety you will need a cycling helmet and reflective clothing depending on the circumstances. The helmet needs to be quality and fit correctly.

When the weather becomes warmer you will start wearing cycling shorts and sleeveless shirt such as the Endura cycling pro sleeveless shirt. There are also baggy cycling shorts available. It is best to look for the ones with adjustability and easy care fabric. Some are hard wearing, water resistant and may have leg vents. Check for a smooth underside to avoid snagging or pressure points. See if they also have durable double or triple stitching on the seams. Short sleeve jerseys are also suitable for the better weather. Look out for low odour fabrics which should also be highly breathable. When choosing one check for a snug fit cuff and collar.

Racing bikes are good bikes and they all have similar traits to them. The light weight frame that you might have to your bike may be made of some light weight metal such as aluminum. The wheels that you are riding on called tires are made to be able to withstand high pressures. The handle bars are slightly lower than usual and the gears and brakes may be in a cluster so you don’t have to take your hands off the grips anytime.

If you just like to simply go on an easy going bike ride, than more than likely a racing type of bike isn’t for you. The bike and its wheels are made smaller for lighter weight and the breaks are made for light weight also and not a quick stop so you may want another bike like a mountain bike. The gear ratio is probably going to be a lot longer on a racing bike to gain speed but you can get another bike such as the mountain bike that you can climb steep hills and mountains with, with ease.

With a light weight frame that you can pick up with one hand and the tight positions you may have to sit will make you accelerate at high speeds higher than a normal bike. The way the bike is made is to limit the wind and create a good position for the rider. With owning a racing bike they can reach pretty high speeds up to 35 mph I would say or at least what I have seen. They might be able to go even faster but I am not a bike rider fan so I wouldn’t know.

Another thing that racing bikes don’t have that a regular bike would is mud flaps to keep you from getting mud all over the back of your legs and bottom. Mudguards are good when riding in a dirt environment or a muddy road. As I stated this is also a choice that goes with a regular bike and not available in racing bikes.

Although you might have been thinking of getting a racing bike, and might have had the rack up for it in the garage already. It might not be the bike for you if you just like to go on easy rides and not fast speedy races. Other people may prefer to challenge their friends or family when owning a racing bike, but the family just may like the regular bikes too. Just choose whichever bike is right for you and what you want out of it. Don’t get the bike that you just want to have to own, get the bike that’s right for you and that you will enjoy riding.

Cervélo Cycles was founded in 1995 by Canadians Phil White and Gerard Vroomen and is based in Toronto, Canada. Cervélo Cycles famously provided frames from 2002-2008 for the Danish professional road cycling team, CSC. Cervélo Cycles also began a new cycling team, the Cervelo Test Team for the 2009 pro cycling season.

Cervélo Cycles uses CAD and computaional fluid dynamics to aid its designs. Frame materials include aluminum and carbon fibre. Cervelo Bikes uses the wind tunnel testing at San Diego Air and Space Technology Center, in California, USA. The distinctive features are compact frames and airfoil shaped down tubes on the S and P series frames.

Cervélo’s Cycles sponsorship of elite athletes, notably Team CSC, has led to widespread recognition of the brand Cervelo.

I have always been into bikes and watching the great riders in action fascinates me. Unfortunately watching and researching is the extent of my involvement but I found a great website that captured my attention.
